Smoky Mountain Field Trip Excursion

  • The 2010 Powell Symposium includes an adventurous and engaging field excursion along the Smoky Mountain Road to the top of the Kelly Grade. The field trip will focus the on the geology, philosophy, and politics surrounding the Kaiparowits coal reserves. In the 1960’s, a consortium of Arizona and southern California utility companies set plans into motion to build four open pit coal mines and a large coal-burning power plant on the Kaiparowits. The USGS has estimated that there are 62.3 billion tons of in-place coal resource in the Kaiparowits. The Powell Symposium field excursion will visit several locations on the Kaiparowits Plateau to view coal seams, the burning coal vents, geological vistas, and the area of the proposed Smoky Hollow coal mine.
